Marquette, Michigan  -  January 13, 2014  -  Thick ice hinders shipping on Lake Superior

I was surprised to hear that the record low temperatures were slowing shipping on Lake Superior.

I would have thought the shipping season was long over, and was surprised to hear that the Soo Locks don’t close until January 15th.

I’ve always had a great respect for those who sail the lakes, but this news moves them up even higher in my esteem. I don’t know what it’s like on a ship in the winter, but it can’t be pleasant.

I’m sure those on board don’t spend a lot of time outside… but if they have to spend even a minute out there, doing any work at all, they are a lot tougher than me.

By the way, for the global warming folks… this is the fastest and thickest ice build-up since 1989, and the second worst since they began keeping track in 1978.
