Marquette, Michigan - May 14, 2014 – Thirteen New Bills designed to punish Michigan insurers

Michigan Legislators have introduced 13 bills in the past week aimed at punishing insurance companies. Some bills make it easier to sue insurance companies for higher amounts. Others prevent insurers from raising rates if you have accidents that aren’t substantially your fault.

There are a lot of people who just HATE insurance companies – generally because they don’t understand insurance. I have to believe our legislators are in that group. One bill mandates that if a company has a low claims year, they should refund the money they didn’t pay out in claims… but at the same time, if they pay out more in claims, they can’t take in more money.

One thing that isn’t on the table yet… fixing the health care component of auto insurance. That brings me to the real point of this discussion… The state is the reason our rates are so high.. and legislators could fix it… but it’s easier to blame and punish insurance companies. Fixing problems takes more courage than these legislators can muster, but at least they LOOK busy by introducing bills that don’t address the real problems. Care to take a guess what party affiliation all the whiny bill sponsors share?
