“Can I bum a smoke off you?”

6/12/2013 Marquette, Michigan — Who actually uses the phrase “Can I bum a smoke off you” anymore? Well, for the first time in quite a few years, one of my neighbors asked me that exact question on Tuesday. Since I don’t smoke, and never have, my immediate answer was “I don’t smoke, don’t ask me again.”

I thought to myself, what a strange question to ask someone you’ve never met or ever seen before. To me, the phrase “Can I bum a smoke” is so 1990’s….

The worst part was this individual wasn’t wearing a whole lot of clothing. I also thought to myself, I think this person should go out and buy more clothing rather than cigarettes. Perhaps that’s why this person was asking me for a smoke?

Does this happen to you very often? I can’t even recall the last time I was asked a question like this. It wasn’t a big deal, I just couldn’t get over it… so maybe it was a big deal?
