Highland, MIAugust 29, 2017 – Every year the Joe Kocur Foundation for Children hosts a celebrity charity softball game to help raise money for the foundation. The game features current and former Detroit Red Wings players (and other various Detroit celebrities which in turn draws a huge crowd of Red Wings fans. This past Saturday myself along with Ryan Ranguette went to Highland to cover the game.

Founded in 2009, the Joe Kocur foundation assists families and charities with the primary goal of focusing on families that need either financial or logistical support. They have helped charities such as Wings of Mercy, FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation, Team Huron Valley Special Olympics, Team Kendal Kidz, Play Like Jackson Foundation, and The Shannon Gaber-Silverthorn Scholarship.

The whole event was an amazing spectacle at Duck Lake Pines Park. Thousands of fans showed up to watch the game and get autographs and pictures with their favorite Red Wings. Current and former Red Wings that participated include Darren McCarty, Dylan Larkin, Dino Ciccarelli, Kris Draper, Jimmy Howard, Joe Kocur, Mickey Redmond, and so many more.

Getting a chance to broadcast the game for Fox Sports Marquette was a special thrill. We were joined by McCarty, Larkin, Ciccarelli, and Redmond at various points. All of those guys were very open and forthcoming. It was a special day and a special event.

If you missed the broadcast you can listen to it here.
