Texaco Country Showdown at Lions Field in Marquette, MI

08/07/2011-Marquette, MI- Musicians with a passion to sing gained a lot of support from the community at the Texaco Country Showdown at Lions Field.  With firefighters grilling out, community members playing softball, and township board members being dunked in the dunk tank, the country showdown participants entertained the crowd with their three best songs.

Lions Field in Marquette Township

Starting out the competition was Ishpeming band, Light After Midnight.  They played a set of three songs with a rock like appeal.  After them was Shannon Wyatt, a Marquette native who said she has been singing too long to even mention.  John Rowe, a young musician who has been singing for seven years can play the drums and guitar.  Another guitar player, Kaitlyn Kachmarsky belted out three songs with inspiration from The Band Perry, Miranda Lambert, and Kellie Pickler.  Jimme Vereb all the way from Skandia, MI amazed the crowd with her wholesome voice.   The last contestant of the showdown was young Darrian McCormick of Newberry, MI.  She also likes Kellie Pickler.

All contestants sang three songs and the judges rated their performance based on  5 criteria, with an opportunity for extra points if they performed their own original songs.  Points were awarded based on marketability in country music, vocal and instrumental ability, originality of performance, charisma, and talent.

The judges listened intently and decided Jimme Vereb was the best contestant of the six participating.  She wailed away and strummed her heart out to a few of her own pieces of original work.

The showdown took place during the re-dedication of Lions Field in Marquette.  Fire fighters and public safety officers grilled out brats, hamburgers, and corn on the cob for member of the community.  All proceeds from this event go to Lions Field.  A dalmatian bouncy tent and pony rides entertained the kids.  Two local softball teams battled out the first game on the re-dedicated Lions Field, then pick-up games were played later on in the afternoon.
