My Basil Is Growing So-o-o-o-o-o Slow!

The Italian in me was so excited when my wife, Debbie came home with a starter kit for sweet basil in March. I can taste it now – – – – PESTO!!!! This was the second time we attempted to grow this leafy plant but here in the UP, you have to start it early and inside because it doesn’t like cold weather.

What variety are these?

When Debbie started this “kit”, it sat by the kitchen window. It took the longest time for these seeds to germinate and show ANY sign of life. For weeks, I was referring to this tray of “plants” as wet sushi rolls!

I may need to relocate the pot in a different spot in the back yard so the plants get full sun every day.  I have threatened to move the pot into the garage over night since we have had several nights where the temperatures have dropped to the mid 40’s! Ahhh!

If you haven’t made pesto, it does take a substantial quantity of leaves to make pesto. You can start out with a blender full of leaves but after you add olive oil, the other ingredients and blend it down, the volume shrinks!

Come on, little plants – GROW!!!
