Marquette, Michigan – October 28, 2015 – Growing up, my single father always kept my hair short 7-year-old me did not care. It was always chopped just above my shoulders and made running between sports more convenient.
In 9th grade, I decided that hair and make-up were important things so for the past six years, I cut my hair only to rid my head of dead ends That is until Monday…
I took the leap of faith and went to Salon Salon in Marquette, full of anxiety and dread. My roommate had just given me a 10 minute pep talk, which unfortunately, did nothing to ease my fears. After a two hour appointment, I came out with shorter, and slightly blonder, locks. I gripped the ends of my hair as they brushed against my shoulders, feeling complete unease. I felt like I had lost 10 pounds from my head, basically bald! The only thing I felt completely okay and happy about was my decision to donate to Locks for Love. Locks for love is a non-profit that takes donated hair and makes hair pieces for disadvantaged children.

The last few days and several compliments changed my mind. It’s actually pretty cute! My hair still goes into a ponytail and it takes around 20 minutes instead of 45 to do my hair, which means more sleep for me in the morning.
I’m thrilled about my decision to make a change, even if it was little and can grow back. Every big change starts with the mindset that you can change something. Sometimes, the smallest feats can give you confidence to accomplish more.
