Marquette, MI – May 22, 2014 – The Marquette Food Co-op welcomed local community and Co-op members to join them today for the Grand Opening of their expanded store front, located at 502 W. Washington. The journey this morning began at the Co-op’s previous location on Baraga Ave., as members gathered to walk together to the new site in a ceremonial fashion.
In lieu of a ribbon cutting ceremony, those that made the trek to the new building broke bread together, staying true to the co-op’s philosophy of “Cooking, and Eating together…. since 1971”. As Glen Sarka , Board president, stated “It took 70-75 people to walk about 8-10 blocks in about 15 minutes…. but really the journey that I would like to focus on a little bit this morning, is the journey that we should all be very proud of… it took 3,600 members about 40 years to walk about two blocks.” That statement is surely a testament to the real story behind this morning’s expedition.
The expansion was much needed. Aisles were getting “really cozy” for the shoppers and shelves were packed without room for an increase to product selection. More checkout lanes for the 600 customers visiting the Co-Op daily were desperately needed, not to mention the parking situation. The new site brings the Marquette Food Co-Op an aesthetically pleasing environment, expanded product selection, increase in local produce, a larger parking lot- and that is just the beginning!
Take a look for yourself and stop on by the new and improved Marquette Food Co-Op today! The Co-Op is open daily 8a.m.-9p.m. Everyone is welcome, no membership is required.
