GWINN, MICHIGAN 02/04/2015- The Gwinn ModelTowner Girls basketball team took on the Ishpeming Hematites this Wednesday night in Gwinn. This game sure was a close one! Throughout the whole time, both teams were either gaining a couple and taking the lead or tying each other. These two teams were phenomenal tonight. The first quarter started off with our Gwinn ModelTowner ladies making the first couple of points and taking the lead for Gwinn. Between Tori Lauren and Ellie Olson for the Gwinn ModelTowners, it looked like Gwinn was going to keep the lead but the Hematites stepped up their game and Jessica Spencer caught up the score with a 3-pointer. The ball was back and forth with each team taking turns, it seemed, when they scored. This quarter ended with a score of 11-10 with the Hematites in the lead. The second quarter started off with the Hematites in the lead but that didn’t stop the ModelTowners from trying their best to keep the Hematites tamed. The ModelTowners took the lead and stayed there for awhile until the Hematites tied the game 18-18 and then made a three pointer, by Jessica Spencer, taking the lead 18-21. Third quarter action brought more action as the Hematites kept the lead with a steady 3 point advantage over the ModelTowners in the beginning. The score at the end of this quarter was 25-23 with the Hematites in the lead by two points. Gwinn had scored their last two points right before the buzzer. The fourth quarter started off with both teams scoring and then tying up the game at 27 points. Ishpeming took the lead for awhile until Ellie Olson, for the Gwinn ModelTowners, scored and brought the score up to 32-31 with the ModelTowners trailing by one. Kaylee Ingler, of the Ishpeming Hematites, broke that close score by making a lay up and took the score up to 34-31. It was looking a little bleak for the ModelTowners towards the end but Tori Lauren gave some hope as she swooshed and made the score 34-33 and then made her basket at the line tying the game 34-34! No one was able to make a basket to break the score and the game went into over-time. It was back and forth and just when you thought one team would take the lead, the other team scored. It got to the point where the game was tied at 37 with 59.9 seconds left to go in over time. Ellie Olson wound up getting her second foul and Jessica Spencer went to the line to make 1/2 of her free throws and brought the score to 38-37 in favor of the Hematites.
