Closed in 2013, the Gilbert Elementary School stands empty.

Gwinn, Michigan  –  February 13, 2015  –  The Gwinn School Board is holding a special meeting to get community feedback on the idea of reopening Gilbert Elementary School.

At a recent building and site committee meeting and afterward at a regular board meeting, the Gwinn School Board decided to research the possibility of reopening of Gilbert Elementary. Right now classes at Sawyer Elementary are crowded with sizes in the high 20s/low 30s per class.

Reopening Gilbert Elementary would alleviate that crowding, says School Board President Ron Lauren, who expects class sizes to come down to the high teens/low 20s, allowing teachers to spend more time with each child and offering them a better classroom setting.

A public meeting will be held on Monday, February 23 to give the community an opportunity to provide the school board with feedback. A survey is also on the Gwinn Area Community Schools Facebook page and at the Gwinn Area Community Schools site as well. The GACS Board of Education encourages the community to participate in the decision-making process by either voicing their opinions online via the surveys or attending the meeting on February 23rd.
