One of the most influential and popular recording artist in country music was once kicked out of a country band! George Strait was given the boot back in his early career.
In the early ’70’s while stationed in Hawaii with the Army, George started his career as a rocker but soon was influenced by Merle Haggard. Strait switched to country and tried auditioning for a country group called the Country Kings. After playing one set with the group, the members got together and canned George because he didn’t really sound country enough.
To took a few more bands and several years later when Strait landed a recording contract with MCA Records in 1981. Strait would amass a career trajectory that would eventually include 60 No. 1 hits — more than any other artist in country music. He has sold over 100 million albums, making him one of the best-selling all-genre artists in history.
