Ishpeming, Michigan – December 7th, 2015 – It’s not something you think about everyday. Just when and how often should you flush your hot water heater tank? Since I live in Ishpeming, I deal with hard water day in and day out. Hard water wreaks havoc on appliances, faucets, and even when washing your car! What’s worse–the sediment really builds up over time and settles at the bottom of your hot water heater tank.
In my home, I have a hot water heater that’s about 10 years old. It was installed in 2005. I was reading several weeks ago that you should really flush your hot water heater annually. So, I assumed that my hot water heater hadn’t been flushed in several years since there had been no one living in the home over that period of time.
Much to my surprise on Saturday when I went to flush out the water in the tank, I put it into a white bucket to see just how dirty the water would be. The water looked crystal clear! I must have a high quality water heater in my home. I was taken by surprise to see this. I flushed the water out for about 3 minutes just to be on the safe side.
I fired the natural gas water heater back up and seemed like everything was back in working order. Make sure if you do this that you follow the instructions that came with your tank, and watch a Youtube video like I did for guidance… gotta love Youtube!
How often do you flush your hot water heater? Leave a comment below.. I would love to know!
