Marquette, MIApril 12, 2023 – Yesterday was National Pet Day, and while I am a day late, I’d like to share a bit about my pets. We have 1 dog and 2 cats, something I never would have imagined in my life.

My Dad is allergic to dogs and cats, so growing up we never had any pets. No dogs, no cats, no fish, nothing. But I’ve always been very fond of dogs, although they haven’t always been fond of me. I have been bitten my friend’s dogs in the past, but that has never deterred my love for them. When I started dating my now fiance, she had a chow that was a couple years old named Mila. We got our first place together in the Spring of 2018 and it was the first time in my life I’ve had a dog living in the same place as me. It’s been such a joy to have pretty much adopted Mila as my own.

Cats were a different story. I didn’t have a big history with them. My best friend had a cat growing up and it would come around sometimes when I was there, but I never associated much with cats. So when Vanessa decided out of the blue she wanted a cat in the summer of 2018, I wasn’t nearly as on board. But still we went to Pet Smart in Marquette to look at the cats they had up for adoption. The first day we went, one black cat in particular caught her eye. When they opened up his cage, he crawled into her arms. I knew right then and there he would be coming home with us, but game respect game and he knew how to play. It was a bit of a rough go initially between he and I, as I wasn’t used to cats and didn’t know how they behaved. But now he and I are the best of friends, and technically the first pet I’ve ever adopted and had from the start.

After a couple of years and a new house we were in the height of the pandemic in 2020. My fiance works in the healthcare field and it was a very tough and stressful time. She stumbled upon another kitten online that was up for adoption in Iron Mountain. I again was unsure, because I thought with one dog and one cat we had a perfect balance. But I of course was wrong. Cici came home in December of 2020 and has been such a vital addition to our family. A much different personality than Emilio, she if very affectionate but yet feisty. And now I can’t believe we ever did life without her.

It’s amazing how much life can change on its own, but even more so how animals that show unconditional love can change your life and even who you are as a person. I am thankful every day for the best pets in the world. Happy (belated) National Pet Day!
