Marquette, MI – April 28, 2020 – As you may know, my duties range beyond “On the Job” from 10am-3pm here of WFXD. I am the Sports Director at MediaBrew Communications, I host a sports show on Fox Sports Marquette and I am the voice of Marquette Redmen football, Redettes basketball, and Redmen and Redettes baseball/softball. Sports broadcasting is truly my passion.
Last week I had an opportunity to spend an hour with the legendary Jim Nantz on a zoom call. Not just me, of course, but it was one of the best hours I have ever spent.
In regular interviews, Jim Nantz would probably cover a number of topics, but few specific to sports broadcasting itself. However, this was tailored specifically to sports broadcasting.
Jim discussed how he prepares for the games he does (a ton of prep), how he got started, and even showed us his spotting board for the 2020 AFC Championship game.
This hour with Jim Nantz gave me a much needed re-motivation during this quarantine. I found myself simply going through the process because nothing felt real. Jim inspired me to read more and to continue to work to grow.
After the meeting, I immediately bought Verne Lundquist’s book “Play by Play” which I am currently reading and enthralled with.
I try to refrain from hyperbole, but spending an hour on a Zoom call with Jim Nantz and 500 other sports broadcasters may have been one of the best things to ever happen to me.
