Tragedy struck over the weekend while Indiana State Fair attendees were waiting for Sugarland to get on stage. A storm generated strong gusts of wind that caused the stage to collapse into the crowd, killing five and injuring at least 40 others.
The fair reopened with a memorial service to mourn the lives lost in the tragedy. Consequently, the fair has canceled the upcoming concerts set for the same stage featuring Janet Jackson and Lady Antebellum.
Engineers are calling for more thought and planning regarding outdoor stages so future events can be conducted safely.
