Traverse City, MI– The Detroit Red Wings began scrimmaging at their training camp at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City Sunday the 18th. Fabian Brunnstrom and Patrick Eaves impressed the crowd throughout the day, especially Eaves when he ripped a one-timer slap shot past the goalie. While Eaves is most likely a lock to be on the starting roster, Brunnstrom is fighting for a spot after his hyped hockey career got off to a slow start in Dallas.
Johan Franzen has been scoring during the scrimmages, which has everyone hoping he is over the scoring slump he experienced during the 2010 season. Ian White, the new defensive addition, has been paired with Captain Nick Lidstrom. They seemed to have an average chemistry between them, but so early into the preseason it has hard to tell how the two will mesh throughout the season. White was signed as a replacement for the retired Brian Rafalski.
Other players fighting for roster spots include rising defensive prospect Brendan Smith, defenseman Jakub Kindl, former Penguin and Michigan Tech star Chris Conner, along with a handful of Grand Rapids Griffin players.
The team’s first preseason game is tomorrow, the 21st, in Pittsburgh at 7:00pm. Penguin star Sidney Crosby has not yet been cleared for contact after suffering a series of season-ending concussions last year. He is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Red Wings.
