Al Quaal Recreation area in IshpemingIshpeming, MI  –  February, 20 2013  –  I got a chance to see the Michigan High School Nordic Skiing Championship this past week at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.

Perfect trail conditions greeted high school racers at and the freestyle sprint racing action proved as very exciting!

Marquette’s Blake Murray edged Traverse City Centrals’ Andrew Bruning in a photo finish in the Boys A final, and Evelyn Delong won her first State Championship title after Traverse City Central’s Erin Lipp crashed in the final 50 meters while leading into the finish lanes.

At the end of the first day, the Marquette Boys were ahead with three in the A final while the Copper Country Ski Tigers took the lead on the girls side. Marquette had a slim lead in the combined score followed by Copper Country and Traverse City Central in third.

I felt like I was at an Olympic event; 100 skiers in spandex, cowbells ringing and the crowd cheering on the teams with everything they had! It was my first time out to a Nordic skiing event and it was awesome!

Enjoy the pictures! Go to for all times!
